Nature, the Outdoors, and Summer Camps
Summer camps are often located in beautiful natural settings, yet surprisingly few place a strong emphasis on ecology, sustainability, or meaningful environmental education. While many camps are surrounded by forests, lakes, and open landscapes, campers are not always encouraged to deeply engage with nature or reflect on humanity’s relationship with the natural world.
In many cases, nature activities are limited to recreational experiences such as fishing, campfires, or simple arts and crafts inspired by the outdoors. Rarely do camps connect these activities to broader conversations about environmental responsibility, spiritual values, or sustainable living practices.
So how can camps create more transformative experiences in nature? What would it look like for young people to develop a deeper sense of connection, responsibility, and care for the earth during their time at camp?
In this thought-provoking discussion, Rabbi Yonatan Neril shares insights on how camps can move beyond entertainment-based outdoor programming and foster experiences that nurture ecological awareness, spiritual growth, and a lasting relationship with nature.
