Fred Krueger on Religion and Science at the Faith and Science Earth Alliance Conference
In this short talk, Fred Krueger, the Executive Coordinator for the National Religious Coalition for Creation Care, explains the complementary roles of science and religion in society. Science is described as providing the “eyes” of humanity by helping us observe, understand, and analyze the world, while religion provides the “heart” by offering conscience, moral guidance, and a framework for interpreting scientific knowledge.
The speaker argues that both are essential and should work together. Without moral and ethical principles, scientific understanding alone may lack direction, while religion helps society determine what is right and wrong and how to respond to the challenges revealed by science.
Using climate change as an example, the speaker emphasizes that scientific evidence highlights urgent global issues, and religion can help guide society’s response by encouraging ethical action, responsibility, and care for the world. The message is that meaningful progress requires a balance between knowledge and values—a partnership between the “eyes” and the “heart” of humanity.
