Faith Leaders Outline Climate Action Steps at COP27, Egypt
Held during the United Nations Climate Conference COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, this interreligious press conference brings together leaders from diverse faith traditions to discuss urgent responses to climate change and climate justice.
Speakers include Bishop Andreas Holmberg of the Church of Sweden (Stockholm Diocese), Rabbi Yonatan Neril of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development, Fr. Eduardo Agosto of the Laudato Si’ Movement, Nigel Savage of Hazon, Rev. Susan Hendershot of Interfaith Power & Light, Dr. Fachruddin Majeri Mangunjaya of Universitas Nasional Jakarta’s Centre for Islamic Studies, Imam Saffet Catovic of the Islamic Society of North America, and Valeriane Bernard, UN representative of Brahma Kumaris. The discussion is also associated with James Sternlicht of Peace Department.
The dialogue focuses on how religious communities are actively engaging in climate action through advocacy, education, and community-based initiatives. While scientific knowledge about climate change is well established, the speakers emphasize that meaningful progress requires a deeper transformation in values, ethics, and human behavior—what many describe as a change of heart.
The panel highlights practical steps being taken across faith institutions worldwide, demonstrating how spirituality, interfaith collaboration, and moral leadership can contribute to addressing the climate crisis and advancing environmental justice.
Topics include COP27, climate action, climate justice, interfaith dialogue, environmental stewardship, sustainability, religious leadership, faith-based environmental initiatives, and global climate responsibility.
