In this opening session of the Faith and Ecology Conference, representatives of the Interfaith Center for Sustainable Development welcome participants and outline the goals of the gathering, which brings together Jewish and Muslim faith leaders, educators, students, and community members to explore environmental stewardship through an interfaith lens.

Rabbi Yonatan Neril provides an overview of the conference structure, explaining that discussions will move from broad interfaith perspectives on environmental challenges to practical action planning within individual faith communities. The event is designed to examine how religious values, teachings, and institutions can inspire meaningful responses to climate change, sustainability, and ecological responsibility.

A central theme of the introduction is the importance of dialogue and relationship-building across religious and cultural boundaries. Participants are encouraged to engage with one another throughout the conference, using the opportunity to connect with people they may not normally encounter and to foster greater understanding, cooperation, and shared commitment to environmental action.

The session concludes with the introduction of Rabbi Michael Melchior, a prominent advocate for social justice, environmental protection, education, and Jewish-Arab coexistence. His leadership and experience in promoting reconciliation and sustainable development set the stage for the conference’s broader discussions on faith-based environmental leadership and community engagement.
