Jerusalem religious leaders urge end to Ukraine war
(21 Mar 2022) Leaders of religious communities in the Holy Land have gathered in Jerusalem to issue statements calling for an end to the war in Ukraine.
Representatives of the various Christian churches, Jewish rabbis, Druze leaders and Muslim leaders gathered Monday outside a compound of Russian churches in central Jerusalem calling for peace.
“This gathering, this holy call in the name of hundreds of millions of believers in the world, who are calling Russia to stop immediately the war against Ukraine,” said Rabbi Rassan Arousi.
Pierbattista Pizzaballa, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem called on leaders in Russia and Ukraine to “solve their conflicts, their misunderstandings, not with war, without justifying any military use of the weapons.”
Russia’s war, now in its 26th day, shows no signs of abating and the fighting is exacting a heavy toll on civilians.
The U.N. says more than 3.38 million people have fled Ukraine.
From the start of the war through Saturday, the U.N. human rights office recorded 902 civilians killed and 1,459 injured. Ukrainian officials say thousands of civilians have been killed.
