Climate Change & Our Future with Dr. Lonnie Thompson

What does decades of climate research tell us about the future of our planet? In this compelling presentation, Dr. Lonnie Thompson, Distinguished University Professor in the School of Earth Sciences and Research Scientist at The Ohio State University’s Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center, explains the growing urgency of climate change and why immediate action is essential for a sustainable future.

Drawing on his pioneering work in ice core paleoclimatology, Dr. Thompson shares scientific evidence showing how Earth’s climate has changed over thousands of years and how human activity is accelerating global warming today. His groundbreaking research on tropical and subtropical glaciers has helped scientists better understand past climate patterns while providing critical insights into the challenges facing future generations.

Throughout the presentation, Dr. Thompson discusses the environmental, social, and economic impacts of climate change and outlines the practical steps needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote sustainability, and protect the planet for generations to come.

This presentation was recorded at the Midwest Symposium on Ecologically Informed Theological Education: Implications for Teaching, Learning and Seminary Life, where scientists, educators, and faith leaders explored how ecological awareness and environmental responsibility can be integrated into education and leadership.

The symposium was part of the Seminary Environmental Leadership Initiative, funded through the Luce Fund for Theological Education, an initiative of the Henry Luce Foundation’s Theology Program, with additional support from the Julia Burke Foundation.
