What does a pangolin — a scaly, ant-eating mammal — have to do with the coronavirus?

It was the likely intermediate host of the virus, according to recent research at South China Agricultural University, as reported in China’s official Xinhua News Agency. The study found that the sequence of a pangolin coronavirus strain “was 99 percent identical to that of infected people in the recent coronavirus outbreak.” Liu Yahong, president of the university, said “Our task is to find the intermediate host that ‘bridges’ bats and people,” since bats hibernate in winter, when the virus emerged, making it an unlikely proximate cause of the outbreak.
